Proctology Department

Department of Proctology ( Piles, Fissure, Fistula etc.)

Diseases of Rectum and Anal Canal are very common and the incidence is rising because of changing lifestyles. There are lot of misconceptions and fear in most of general population, regarding these diseases. This leads a lot of patients to go for alternative treatment by Quacks, which can be very dangerous.

Modern technology and advances in Proctology have made treatment of these diseases, Safe and  effective with minimal side effects and recurrence rates.

Haemorrhoids (Piles) :- This is enlargement of vascular cushions at anal canal. Usually they present as painless swelling at anus, which gradually goes on increasing in size. This is one of the commonest causes of Painless bleeding. But the diagnosis should be confirmed from an expert, because many times, Rectal & Colonic Cancer can present as painless bleeding. Most of the early Piles resposnd to conservative treatment, diet  modification, exercise and healthy lifestyle. Pain is present when there are complications like Thrombosis, Infection or associated  Fissure etc. Various modern treatment modalities are available at Stellars Proctology departmant.

Sclerotherapy (Injection Therapy)  :-  Sclerosant injections are given in the Pile masses so that the piles shrink in size and bleeding is also controlled. This is a simple OPD procedure. It is painless and gives good results in selected group of patients. this should not be  used in any other anorectal diseases, especially Infective diseases.

LASER ablation :- Submucosal Coagulation of Pile masses is done by applying Diode Laser through optical fiber delivery system. This is a Day Care procedure. With use of Lasers, the pain is less and bleeding is minimal.

MIPH (Stapled haemorrhoidectomy) :- This is a minimally invasive treatment for large pile masses. This is a day care procedure with minimal post operative  pain & bleeding.

RAR (Recto Anal Repair) :-  This is also a minimally invasive procedure with very good results in selected patients of large prolapsing piles. This  is a good alternative to expensive procedures like DGHAL and MIPH

Haemorrhoidectomy :- Conventional Haemorrhoids excision is necessary in a number of patients. In experienced hands is still a safe and effective treatment modality.

The choice of treatment modality is customised for optimum results based on Individual patient and the nature of disease.

Fissure in Ano

This is a fairly common problem wherein there is a linear cut in Anal canal. Most of the times it is a very painful condition and may be associated with bleeding. Usually associated with constipation and hard stools. Majority of patients resposnd well to conservative treatment. Few patients with severe or recurrent symptoms require surgery like Sphincterotomy.

Fistula in Ano

This is a usual sequely of  Abscess near Anal Canal. There is a single or multiple openings near Anal canal which keep on discharging purulent fluid on & off. There is a opening inside Anal Canal or Rectum and tracts between these openings. Treatment is essentially surgical.

  • Fistulatomy – Laying open the Fistula Tract
  • Fistulectomy – Excising out the Fistula tract
  • LASER ablation- Entire fistula tract between external & internal openings is ablated by Laser fiber put in through the tract
  • Seaton – Some high variety fistulas are better treated by placement of Seaton through the tract

Anal Polyps/Papillae :-   Inflammatory hypertrophy of of anal glands and Papillae cause irrittation, pain & sometimes bleeding. Many of these patients respond to conservative treatment . Some patients require Surgical intervention. LASER ablation is a good choice for these patients.

Carcinoma Anal canal & Rectum :- Many a times Carcinoma of Anal Canal or Rctum clinically mimics the other benign conditions. Hence it is very important to confirm the diagnosis from an expert rather than self diagnosis & treatment.
